About administering Menopur. One dose of Menopur comes in two vials. One vial is water and the other vial is a powder. You only pay for the powder vial. Each vial costs around $89. We ordered 10 vials. To mix the dose, you take a syringe with a very long needle. You inject the needle into the water vial, extract 1 ml of water. Then you remove the syringe and inject the water into the vial containing the powder. The powder disolves immediately. You remove the syringe and then remove the long needle. Once the long needle is removed, you add a shorter needle (Thank God!). The syringe is re-injected into the powder/water solution and 1 ml is extracted. Then it's ready to be given.
About admistering Follistim. Follistim comes in a pen. It looks really similiar to an epi-pen. There are 2 doses in 1 cartridge. The cartridges have to be refrigerated until use, which means I have 4 cartridges of this drug sitting in my fridge. Never thought I'd see the day. Okay, back to the drug. So you take the pen apart, insert the cartridge, and put the pen back together. Then you turn the end of the pen to the correct dosage. Then you get a needle and insert it on the top of the pen. Discard the needle when done.
Both shots are given when the Lupron is given. Luckily my Lupron dose was lowered to 5 units instead of 10.
Like I said before this blog is to educate. Please do not think I am complaining. I would take 10 shots a day for the rest of my life if it meant I got to be a mommy one day. 3 shots for 10 days does not seem so bad. I continue to be grateful that needles don't bother me. And grateful that Citi Card has a protection service that alerts us to large purchases. Yep, that $1,773.90 charge to walgreens was ours!
All off my drugs!
